Why Machines That Bend Are Better

Compliant mechanisms have lots of advantages over traditional devices. SimpliSafe is awesome security. It's really effective, easy to use, and the price is great. Check out SimpliSafe here: simplisafe.com/veritasium
I visited the Compliant Mechanisms Research group at Brigham Young University and spoke to Professor Larry Howell:
www.compliantmechanisms.byu.edu
At the above link, you can download 3D-print files to make some of the objects in the video, plus learn more about compliant mechanisms.
What I learned about compliant mechanisms I summarize in the 8 P's of compliant mechanisms:
1. Part count (reduced by having flexible parts instead of springs, hinges)
2. Productions processes (many, new, different enabled by compliant designs)
3. Price (reduced by fewer parts and different production processes)
4. Precise Motion (no backlash, less wear, friction)
5. Performance (no outgassing, doesn't require lubricant)
6. Proportions (reduced through different production processes)
7. Portability (lightweight due to simpler, reduced part count designs)
8. Predictability (devices are reliable over a long period of time)

U KNOW THESE BENDING MECHANISMS TEND TO BREAK OVER THE TIME/CERTAIN NUMBER OF CYCLES JUST LIKE THE SKIP BUTTONS IN MY AIWA CD PLAYER BROKE MANY YEARS AGO BECAUSE THEM AND THE SPRINGS WERE ONE PIECE OF PLASTIC.

I'm not sold on this idea yet, metals will eventually fail from fatigue, imagine this happens just as the ISS has turned its thrusters away from the sun? On the other end of the scale, we've been using fibre optic cables for decades already, they also flex and break from fatigue but still work?

That thing that expands under certain speeds blew his mind... but mechanical advance distributors have been working using the same principle for decades. Nothing ground breaking there, just that they can now make it with one piece instead of multiple.

Why not to use at least the big plastic items (especially as a mass product)... 1. Plastic soup is already an issue 2. Plastics go brittle with age and thin hinging parts are quickly prone to fail, which... 3. Makes this a throw away item which again adds to 1. At least metal vice grips can be recycled by melting it and reusing that metal. I am sure it can have an application and research should be done, but I am against using plastic as a mass product due to the pollution it causes to the planet.

      2 dni temu

@Lachlan Jansen Sorry, but I have to disagree with you, Lachy. It clearly says that 'this little hole makes two complete revolutions every second' Big red arrow points to the hole in the toothed wheel. 2 complete revolutions per second = 2 cycles per second = 2 Hertz. He was quite clearly talking about revolutions of the wheel, not movements of the activating arm.

no the arm moves 72 times a second the gear has 36 teeth. 72/36 = 2
